Damini Ogulu, also known as Burna Boy, a Nigerian singer, has come under fire for making ‘degrading’ remarks about Afrobeats. According to Naija News, the ‘Last Last’ crooner dismissed Afrobeats as ‘nothing’ with no substance during a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in New York.
He stated:

“Afrobeats as people call it is mostly about nothing, literally nothing. There’s no substance to it. Nobody is talking about anything. It’s just a great time, it’s an amazing time.”
Many Afrobeats fans around the country were outraged by the singer’s remark, accusing him of denigrating the experiences and Afrobeat songs of other musicians.
In response to Burna’s remark, one Twitter user, Larry, stated:
‘Dear Burna Boy, you don’t need to downplay other people’s crafts just because you sampled your way to the top.
Rahliata Musa said: ‘No be your fault. What substance does his songs have too?’
Wayup wrote: ‘After benefitting from the genre youre here talking rubbish. What do you mean there’s no susbance in Afrobeats?
